Lyrics: Allow a new song, a long now We push on, scarred healing man A sad luck, a young cool sigh I feel I owe, my tongue A grand young sea to lie in We talked love, did good, drew awe Eye the clot, bleeding, its a new road Swan song, we walk on Original Tagalog: Araw na lubhang mapanglaw Lipos ng kadiliman Nasadlak ang kanyang buhay Dahil sa iyo bayan Ang kanyang simulain Tigmak ng dugo’t luha Ay dapat rating itaguyod Hanggang sa wakas

a lifetime of blue light fast asleep on saturday night beyond the singularity i wonder what could be in a place without a hall of mirrors and space to change and grow I chose the garden to stand guard and keep a close eye on all the branching paths I see some flowers just as they are some from bulb to bloom but I can’t fully know its interiority is there violence in picking a flower? and can it remember everything it’s weathered? (spoken) after 12 hours in the smoky beating dark watching the sun rising over the canal you asked me for a light and I had cute branded matches in my pocket then you lit your cigarette in well worn docs and i, deep in my exhaustion, with a cursed shy tongue barely said a word the possibility of a friend passed and that reality folded itself up dropped a few ashes to remember it by then disintegrated just out of reach garden to stand guard on god to tend a garden stand in tender garden dance in tender garden (entenderen)

about

Hiya, this is a collection of songs originally written in a workshop with Julia Holter during the summer of 2020 via CAMP. All proceeds will be donated to Oakland’s Planting Justice. Thanks for listening!

About Planting Justice:
Established in 2009, Planting Justice promotes food sovereignty, economic justice, and community healing. They have built 450 edible permaculture gardens in the SF Bay Area and created green jobs in the food justice movement for those transitioning from prison. plantingjustice.org

Notes:

"witch hats"
This is an automatic writing exercise in which some aspect of the piece is improvised and uninhibited. I wrote words and thoughts related to things I saw or felt in a notebook as I walked from my apartment to Ocean Beach in San Francisco through Golden Gate Park. I also made field recordings throughout the walk. This then became the basis of the piece in which I recited each of the lines at random and manipulated parameters in a Max/MSP granular synth patch as it recorded continuously.

This excerpt from “Infinite City” by Rebecca Solnit which inspired me to take this walk and choose the particular methods above:
“A book is an elegant technique for folding a lot of surface area into a compact, convenient volume; a library is likewise a compounding of such volumes, a temple of compression of many worlds. A city itself strikes me at times as a sort of library, folding many phenomena into one dense space…a folding together of cosmologies and riches and poverties and possibilities”

"a long now"
This is a phonetic translation of a song called “Araw na lubhang mapanglaw” (“Day of Deep Mourning”) from an album of songs by the Philippine National Democratic Struggle called “Philippines Bangon! ARISE!". "Araw" is part of an album of revolutionary songs written during protests of Ferdinand Marcos’ military dictatorship in the 1970s. The original song was dedicated to Francis Santillano, who was an activist slain during a peaceful protest. It is a song for fallen revolutionaries to turn grief into revolutionary courage and action. It's a song that struck me as it eerily echoes our now in so many ways. The English lyrics are phonetic approximations of the original Tagalog lyrics, not a direct translation. Here, the original lyrics and phonetic translation are layered on top of one another.

"tender garden"
a song with some secrets (sorry!)
